Notes:

1. 女 has a slightly different sound to it, so the accent above the “u” also has two dots signifying this difference.
2. Northern Chinese accents (such as in Beijing) tend to add an 儿 sound to the end of some words.
3. Another way you may hear of to refer to kids is 小朋友

Variations:
In Lesson 16, we showed you how the particle 了 is used to form past tense. It is also commonly used in phrases that indicate a “change in situation. Take a look at the following examples.

我很好.
Note: It is improper to say 我好 as the 好 here needs a modifier like 很.
我好了.
Here, no modifier is needed since we have a 了 which gives balance to the sentence.
你怎么了?
(The 了 indicates past tense here.)
她来.
她来了.

还 is another word that gets used often and has different meanings based on context.

还可以 – This is a common response to “How’s it going?”

Grammar Notes:

Adding a 了 to the end of a sentence can change it to past tense. Adding a 要 to a sentence can change it to future tense. Take a look at the following examples:
